Rayner - Page 2

Henry and Mary Anne Rayner came to Flitcham some time before 1891 as described on Page 1 (click here). Some of their children (and grandchildren) are on this page. There are more Rayner photos on Page 3 (click here)

Stephen Rayner (below) was Henry and Mary Anne's sixth and youngest son. He worked as a groom at Eaton Hall, Cheshire and married Sally Pugh at Chester in 1909. He enlisted with the Cheshire Regiment in 1916 and later fought with the Royal Warwickshires. The photo below was taken just before he embarked for France in 1917. He was killed in action 23rd March 1918 and has no known grave but is commemorated on Flitcham War Memorial. Edward John Rayner (1873-1945), known as Jack, was Henry and Mary Anne's second son. He married Eleanor Grief and they had one child, a daughter, also named Eleanor. Jack and Eleanor lived for many years at 5 Stanley Street, King's Lynn.     (Photo kindly lent by Jack's grandson, Tony Pearce of North Wootton). Harry Rayner (1874-1959). Photo taken in Salonika c1917. Visited his brother William in California and lived there for some time, working as a gardener in Berkeley. He married Jane May Beckett in 1928. (Jane already had a son, Tony Beckett, who was living in Australia in 2008). Harry and Jane lived for many years at Marsh Lane, Gaywood. May Rayner was a daughter of Henry & Mary. She died in 1963. She married John Brazier (above right) at Flitcham in 1912 and they had two children: Basil and Elsie.
Jabez James Rayner (1877-1920) was Henry and Mary's sixth child and fourth son. Born at Longham he married Patience Appleton on 22.12. 1900 when this photo was taken. He was died in accident while working as a platelayer on the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway near his home at Honing. Patience Rayner nee Appleton (1880-1977) born at North Walsham and went to Australia in 1922 with her three children, Lavinia May (1901-1999), Stanley James (1907-1958), and Leonard Harry (1911-2002). This photo was taken pre-1920. Lavinia, Stanley, and Leonard Rayner c1915. Peter Rayner of King's Lynn who supplied most of this information is Leonard's son. "My Nan told me the family would come from Honing by train and travel by horse and cart from Hillington station to Flitcham. Working on the railway grandfather had a free pass. She was with Henry and Mary Anne in Flitcham on one occasion when Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra visited them to give them a "Best Kept Cottage" award."
